 I still get blown away by blogs.  Not often. I've become jaded.  This is the blog of a French Stylist named Anne Millet.  Oh my! I have fallen hard for her universe.  I looked at every single page of the blog and now i want her to adopt me. She is going to be HUGE. This is my prediction. 

 

Being a sylist is seeing.  I don't know how she does it. How does she know to assemble thigs in just the right way?  I know what i like but I don't always know how to get there.

Voila les enfants.

When I work on my novel for hours it begins to feel as though it is more real than real life. As though all that's around me feels like a fiction. That gets kinda weird. (schizophrenic weird?) I was in the rain, in Paris, and came to realizing I was in fact in Southern California and that the strange noise I was hearing was a humming bird dive-bombing next to my window. This is by the way an ugly-ass sentence, sure sign that I need a break.

When I need to come up for air I spend a few minutes in the world of blogs (also not real, I should be reminded.)

Via this amazing blog (can't ever pronounce it, can't spell it)  I just discovered the art of Lulie Wallace, the artist who did the cover of this month's House of Fifty.  I thought I should take a few minutes to share all this beauty and energy:

 

 

Oh Gaaad it's so beautiful!  I have a weakness for flower paintings and these are just a small miracle. I want them ALL!

So fun!!!

had such a weird week, people.... which led me today to take my first yoga class in a year.  Badly needed. My spine is in rigor mortis over here. When i want to look to the right I have to bring the whole body with it, feet and all.

Here are a few things that took place in the last week, not in order of importance.

I bought everything to furnish an apartment in Portland where my family will be commuting for the next four months.  I mapped out everything, noted all the weirdo Swedish names and bought everything down to the potato peeler, trash cans, beds and bedding at Ikea.  It was all purchased on Saturday and it was delivered in another state the next day. Merci Ikea Portland, you rock! The budget was under $2500. When the production is over we will donate it all to a woman shelter. It feels so much better than renting furniture, and we won't be basking on Formaldehyde. 

I hosted a dinner party that same saturday but first had the meltdown of the century. My eyes were puffier than my gougères.

I had a huge fight (a mezza voce one which in a way was hilarious looking back on it) with a librarian when I returned my library books.  This was a week ago and the books are now MISSING! Do you think it is possible retaliation? Could people do these kinds of things?  In fact they do. That asshole better not mess with me.  YOU DO NOT MESS WITH ME...  or else i cry really really loud. (i'm known to do that)

And on Sunday my husband left for Portland so now it's just me and my boy at home. I do not like :((((

Voila my friends.  Once again I have demonstrated a total lack of sang froid in the face of change and medium-to-low adversity. The plan is to handle it better next time.

This is my very first giveaway!  I hope all of you participate because I'm doing it to promote the work of my favorite artist and friend Isabelle Bryer, and she is simply awesome. (A quick story of our friendship is below if you have the patience to read before entering the giveaway.)

Isabelle and I have known each other for about 18 years.  Two French girls with drooling babies, recently married, isolated in the L.A. Jungle.  We found each other and never let go.  She's my sista from another motha. We find each other's humor hilarious, tell each other everything, we eat each other's food (mostly I eat her food) and try to be the best of friends and support each other through highs and lows.

I remember the first time I saw her work.  I had know her for a short while and she had not mentioned she was an artist. I don't think she even saw herself as one. 

She had painted illustrations on a wooden trunk for her baby daughter's bedroom and I was stunned.  It was a little like I had made friends with Clark Kent only to discover weeks later that he was Superman.  I was amazed by her effortless ability to fly through the air (oh wait, that's superman, I've got my metaphors all mixed up.)  in a word, I was smitten.

But really, the reasons I love her are so many.  The encouragement, the empathic ear, the voice of reason, the support and playfullness make her a vital part of my life. Every girl should have a friend like her and I feel truly blessed.

The pictures are of her new series. I call it the purple-haired girl, she calls it the Felicity series.

"When and why did you begin writing?

When did I not write? If back in the days they had the ultrasound technology they have now they would have seen me tracing letters on the walls of my mother’s uterus. Okay that sounded horrible. I have always written. I don’t sing, don’t dance, don’t paint and I’m a terrible blusher, so writing ends up being the only form of self-expression that I’m truly comfortable with.


When did you first consider yourself a writer?

For years my husband introduced me as ‘his wife the writer’ and I would blush and protest that I could not possibly be a writer because no one had deemed to publish my work. If you are what you do, then I have always been a writer, but giving myself that title was my challenge, my dream and the source of a lot of angst. I thought writing a blog might make me a writer, but it only made me a blogger (no offense, bloggers rock!) I hoped that writing a book might, but that didn’t quite do the trick for me. It really wasn’t until people purchased Hidden in Paris and began sending me emails telling me how the novel entertained them or touched them (I was praying for both) that I did consider myself a writer. I’ve been a writer ever since…. It’s been three months only, so I still could chicken out!"

When you're happy and you know it

Thanks to all of you who have been leaving lovely comments lately.  For some reason they all landed in my spam folder.  I thought you were mad at me, so I was mad right back at you... I'm done with this bud-shit blogging, I said.

 

So it was a little bit embarrassing when I opened my spam folder and found all your sweet comments all tucked in and begging to be published.  It was like Christmas in June. You were not mad and it was only a silly misunderstanding, hehe...

 

 One of the hidden-then-found comments allowed me to discover artist Bridget Coux, who lives in France and paints the most precious little oil paintings.  You can buy Bridget's paintings here.  I want to own them all.  I'm particularly smitten by her use of black.

Meanwhile, I've replaced my hour or so of commenting on your blogs with exercise.  I hope you're not mad that our relationship is turning into a one way street.  I'm exercising everyday and I feel so good about it and because of it. I've lost some weight, not much but that's because I'm gaining muscles, right?

 

Things are good here.  Very good.  Or maybe exercising is helping my mood.  It's a bizarre feeling to wake up in the middle of the night, and finding nothing to be anxious about (believe me i try). Of course there is guilt: my entire persona being defined around the guidelines of neurosis, self-doubt, struggle and confusion, I feel i should apologize for being happy.  And a nagging thought: Am i still likable when things are going my way for once?

Oh screw it...

Mustard Seed and Moonshine

This will be my last post until I touch ground again.  Leaving for six weeks is a huge deal to me.  I'll relax once I get there but right now I'm stressed. As of yesterday I wasn't even sure I had found a house sitter. I hope to take pictures in NYc and Paris even though this is no gift to you because, lets face it, my pictures suck. 

To leave you with images pretty  enough to last a few days, here is the phenomenal work of artist Kate Carlyle, of Mustard Seed and Moonshine.  

Dishes inspired by nature, good enough to eat on everyday and to serve as museum pieces down the line.

"We are a studio in Cape Town, which I started in 1992 with one person and it has grown very organically into 34 people with almost no turnover of people at all ……….so all the people who started with me are here still.  We all have a passion for flowers and everything is based on the botanical form…….in fact as a little girl I was incredibly fortunate to visit the Harvard Glass flowers (my father was a scholar for a year at Harvard until we returned home here to SA)and I remember being completely transfixed by these fantastic feats in glass and minute details of nature."

I dig her way of doing business.  Art, a lot of heart and passion, a commitment for her enterprise to be a home where employees can grow and blossom, and an eye for excellence.  That's one great business model.

I feel a bit lost because I have not been reading your blogs for days.  What's going on out there in your worlds?  Next post will be from NYC if I survive the next 48 hours.

Matchmaker, matchmaker...

Did I ever tell you about the time I played matchmaker?  

My friend Isabelle had a friend, Katy Allgeyer, who was single.  Katy is a talented woman.  She's a Feng Shui expert who writes the only Feng Shui blog you'll ever need to read: Feng Shui by fish girl, and she is the artist who created the paintings in this post.

So here is my matchmaker story. One day I was at a movie with my husband.  I remember very clearly, the movie was the absolutely heart-wrenching Gloomy Sunday.  We were waiting for the movie to begin when my husband said: 'S. and his wife have split up.' 

I tried to imagine S single. S is the kind of free spirit who collects everything as he travels the world and sends poetic/ cryptic collage postcards from across the globe. 

Within an instant later I knew!  I told my husband: 'He needs to meet Katy!  They would be perfect for each other.'  'Slow down', my husband said.  'he just split up.  The marital bed is still warm.'  'No, no, call him,' I said.  'Call him right away. She's it!'

It took a lot of insisting from us.  Me nagging my husband, my husband nagging poor S. who had no desire to be matched up. Unbelievable enough, the two finally met and you can guess how the story ended:  happily, just the way I like my stories.

The two now share their time between their two (Feng Shui) homes in Maine and North Carolina. Katy repays me by being my sole purveyor of fantastic Old Mill of Guilford grits.  (Those do make me a little bit FAT but if you have not tasted good grits, you haven't lived.)

So who gets the credit for this beautiful match?  Me or good Feng Shui?  I'll never know.

Gustavo Aimar

Two posts in a day?  Are you kidding?  I'm worried it might give me meningitis or something.  Pam Garrison (in the post about paper mache from a few minutes ago) says she was inspired by artist and illustrator Gustavo Aimar.  I checked him out and omygod:

How darling is this? 

First there is Gustavo Aima's flickr pages where I borrowed those images.  Then there is his home blog, which shows how he works and his life in general and made me want to be adopted by him and his family. (I used to want to be adopted by Brad and Angelina, but then realized it would be wrong because I was actually physically attracted to Angelina.)  and then there is the main blog, unfortunately in portugese. I think you can buy some of his original pieces here, and he has also published many books.

Painted roses

Once in a while i discover a painter that makes me dizzy with the urge to buy paintbrushes and blank canvases.  Now of course I could never do what Parastoo Ganjei does, not even close, but I've always had the dream of being able to paint flowers.  Not birds, not people, just flowers.

In the mean time I would not mind owning a wall full of her work.  She's quite prolific and her work is completely affordable and available on her website.  

She tries to paint several times a week, but I like that her painting are not postage stamp size like so many 'painting a day'.

I found Parastoo Ganjei (don't you love that name) via Gretchen Kelly, another glorious artist I told you all about here.

Now I'm off to visit your blogs for the first time in a while.  Let see how prolific you guys have been...

The other day I was browsing through my favorite blogs with my husband looking over my shoulder.  Suddenly he said:  Hey, go back:  

I don't want to go back.  What?

I want to see that.

'That', was an original watercolor nude by Gretchen Kelly. 

I know her, I said proudly, she's one of my blogging friend.  

She's good, he said.

Here are a few paintings.  This is original art that is still affordable.  Prints are nice, sure, but to me nothing compares to the pleasure of owning original art. Gretchen's work is mostly of nude beauties.

Now Gretchen, I told you that my husband liked your work.  Enough to google you himself when i refused to cooperate (I don't like when he tells me what to do.) What I didn't tell you is that when I met him he was an artist too. A photographer.  He does other things now, but his photography has been exhibited all over the world, including the V&A and Paris' Pompidou center. All over the world, that is EXCEPT in the US where his work was considered a bit too risqué for mainstream. (This was 20 years ago.)  All this to say he is not afraid of nude paintings of beautiful women, au contraire.

Elephant art

I'm practically mute these days.  What a relief he?  That's because i'm bored/procrastinating/confused/scared/hungry.  It will pass.

I just feel like feasting on images, not overdosing on words and opinions, (especially mine.)

I love these paintings and prints by Mati Rose McDonough.   Those happy little elephants remind me that things will probably going to be okay, and that everything is, as always, in my head.

foxy snow angel (and perfect boobs)

Hey, great news: my mamogram-ultrasound combo came out fine.  Oh, I had not told you about that little something weighing on me, had I?  Well, it turns out that my boobs are perfectly healthy, (albeit as lumpy as bean bags-- but not shaped that way oh god.)  Funny,i did not know I was worried until i walked out of the office and realized how feathery light I suddenly felt, as though I had lost about 300 lbs.  I practically had to hold on to lamp posts not to fly off.

Speaking of perfect boobs (I can only imagine the google search that will follow this post)

Sophie Cuvelier's garlands

The work of French textile artist Sophie Cuvelier has been sprouting all over France and has me wanting to get rid of everything in the house to replace it with garlands.

So simple and charming.  So time consuming. The website had a beautiful slide show (click on diaporama) where you can see the tinting process.  Those are hand tinted, hand cut and hand made in France.

The thing is the banner is there, it exists.  I have no idea why it's not appearing. Anyone a Typepad wiz?

Another manifestation of supreme failure on my part this week is that I still haven't gotten a Christmas tree. Aren't we somewhere near the 17TH OF DECEMBER?!  I'm thinking it's toast for this year.

It's just that I'm not looking in the right places.  I'm told I should use my actual feet to get to the actual car and drive to actual stores.  Instead I've been doing all my perusing of x-mass trees online.

I wonder if Atelier XT could weave me a fresh new banner.  Just like the trees, with ribbons and fabric and little goobledygook. I don't like my old stinking banner anymore, anyway, and it hates me right back.

Note:  Post was written for nothing, the stinking banner got a bit scared of me and popped right back in as soon as I pressed "save".  What the-what the F*&% I understand nothing tonight.

I need hearts in my life right now. And the word love has never felt more necessary.  It's the law of attraction I hear. You attract what you focus on.  I have been focusing on the things that make me upset, and they sure have materialized in abundance.

So LOVE. HAPPY. HEALTH. SNOW (i'm craving snow.) FRIENDS.  LAUGHTER and ABUNDANCE is what I wish, for myself and everyone.

He says Obama, I say Obama.

This summer our family got into the habit of screaming OBAMA! at the top of our lungs each time we jumped into the pool.  How many little friends whose parents are of a different persuasion are now doing this at home? Yikes.

 

My husband and kid made a pact that if Obama won they would jump into the (now unheated) pool with their clothes on.  Frankly, I don't see it.  That's what i really want to see on election night.  It's  small miracle my husband and i see eye to eye in terms of politics because we disagree on the most basic facts of life.  For example, he claims that the pool water will be 'on the warm side'.  I say it will be 'on the freezing side'.  

Other example of disagreements.  This I found on Australian/French blog Maisonette.  It's the work of artist Maarten De Ceulaer.

I see these colors are mostly blue.  My husband would call them green. 

Same (but entirely different), the work of Emily Barletta via Design Sponge,which I see as mostly pink and he would calls mostly red.

Hadley Hutton sale

I received a note by Hadley Hutton telling me that she is having a sale.  

I can't get enough of her birdies and flowers.

Even the original 8x10s on wood (she layers painting, archival drawings, pastel and encaustic wax) are under $150.  The prints are much less.

What to wear this fall: a shovel or a wheelbarrow?

Because I wouldn't know how to choose.

Sheesh.  Next to those, it's my lingerie that looks industrial.

These I found via the beautiful blog A Mad Tea Party With Alis.  Artist Cal Lane works industrial part in filigree via a technique called plasma cutting. (Alis also gave this link to explain what that is)

I met the walrus

Thank you to my good friend Robin  (who doesn't blog but should) for showing me this video this morning.  It blew me away.  If you are into John Lennon and design, it should rock your socks off too.  

The soundtrack is a real interview of John Lennon by a 14 year old, for a school project back in 1969.  The graphics are very, very exciting to me.  And what John Lennon is saying?  Still pertinent today.  Haven't we learned a thing in 40 years?

Apartment Therapy knows me?

I'm all over the place today again. At the moment, the insanity versus enjoyment of life quotient is high. Maybe when school ends, so will insanity.  (Though it could get worse.  What do you do with your children for two long months? Us: we argue. It's quite stimulating, really.)  

But blogging is still fun.  For one Apartment Therapy L.A.  talked about my blog today.  The sudden influx of traffic is baffling.  But even more puzzling to me is that they know my blog exists at all.

But back to design,and art.

The doshi levien sofas i just discovered in decocentric got me quite excited.  

Comfortable?  Not sure.  Awesome?  YES! The inspiration too is wonderful:

As you might see I'm still struggling with Typepad.  Nothing looks as I need it to look, but every time I try to fix a problem, I create five more, so F@# it.

Yeondoo Jung

Thank you How About Orange for being up as early as I was, because I had painstakingly emptied my google reader the night before and had nothing to feast my eyes on.   And I was up, and cranky, and anxious.

Now I have a personal affection for children drawings.  I can't trash my kids most mundane doodle.  It's becoming a problem because my 9 year old is a heavy producer.  At age two he went through an entire ream of paper and covered them with crisscrossed lines, in what we now believe were train tracks.  (There was also the possibility that he was satan.)

How About Orange posted about the art of Korean artist Yeodoo Jung, and it brought a huge grin to my face, not easy to do at 5.a.m.
