i just read your post and thought i'd write you a comment concerning the "mate" enigm :)
mate is a special kind of tea made out of dried leaves of the mate-plant and it's the national drink of argentina. it contains caffeine and is a traditional south american beverage.
but i'm sure people in south america "mate" while drinking maté-tea, so your interpretation was very close :)
